Design flaw

There was a hiatus of two and a bit weeks after this one. Sadly, after a long illness, Linda’s mum died and we were called over to the States at short notice for the funeral. I didn’t have any strips drawn in advance so I had to stop for a bit.

It was a odd two weeks. While we were there the Cubs won the World Series, Donald Trump became President Elect and the family celebrated a muted Thanksgiving a couple of weeks early while we were all together.

Bird scarer

One of these things has appeared in my neighbourhood. It’s essentially a kite in the shape of a bird of prey (or a kite in the shape of a kite if you like) tethered to a pole. It’s made out of polythene so it’s very light and it only takes the lightest of breezes to send it aloft, and as it’s tethered it rises and then swoops down suddenly like stooping buzzard. The combination of the silhouete and the movement keeps nesting seagulls away. This summer we haven’t had any seagulls on our roof.

However, it does also look like a very large cat toy.

Honda Jazz

One of the joys of living in a seaside town is the seagull lottery. Will your car be the one they use as a toilet, or will they aim for the blue BMW a few cars down? (For some reason, they always choose the BMW.)

This is my own Honda Jazz, a model known as a Fit in every other market – it would appear that its only the UK that objects to having a car named after uncontrolled muscle spasms. It’s grey, or, if you’re working in Honda UK’s marketing department, Urban Titanium.

It usually wins the seagull lottery at home, but at work, it’s less lucky. My parking space is under a row of lime trees which leak sap all over the cars underneath them, and once that bakes on it’s hard to shift. That, and there is a bird in the vicinity we all know as the atomic pigeon; I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.

This is my first diabetic Easter. I miss Creme Eggs. However, it looks like I don’t really have that much to miss any more

That’s the problem with subcontracting your work out – the people involved just don’t have the same involvement in making sure they do a good job. Ask anyone who has had to deal with a company that has subcontracted out its customer care to a call centre in Bangalore. Talktalk Broadband, I haven’t forgotten you, and I note that five years after I gave you up as a lost cause you’re still bottom of Which’s customer service tables.

Hurrah, a strip with an actual cat in it at last! And a rabbit and a seagull.

Seagull dance – winter remix

smith-pilcher-911-150203I didn’t manage to do a strip without any cats in it on Monday, so to compensate I managed to do it in this one. It’s good to have Humprey Earthworm back.

Worm charming

smith-pilcher-845-150902Not much to say here, apart from ‘watch these gulls go…’

Seagull Whisperer II

smith-pilcher-783-150410I’m not too sure about the colouring on this one. The stone on the fireplace (a tribute to those fireplaces you would find in US sitcom houses in the 60s – onday I will have a house with that fireplace) is coloured too strongly, so there’s no real contrast between the fireplace and the wall behind it. I’m not sure the first three panels read clearly enough.
